header

Educators have an important role in raising awareness of the legacy of residential schools and are encouraged to incorporate activities that teach about the history of residential schools, honour the resilience of residential school Survivors, and address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.”

statement from Manitoba Education

Throughout the week of September 26-30, 2022, our schools participated in various teachings and activities in recognition of Truth and Reconciliation Week, focusing on the history and impact of residential school systems, to recognize our shared history and future.

Throughout the week, the Brandon Urban Aboriginal Peoples’ Council (BUAPC), along with several community partners, planned a number of public events and activities at the Riverbank Discovery Centre.

While many of our schools participated in Orange Shirt Day on September 29th, we also had approximately 500 Grade 4-6 students, from ten of our schools, attend a selection of events at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. Students experienced traditional teachings such as: the significance of the sacred fire; traditional approaches to wellness; and the meaning of Truth and Reconciliation, through storytelling and the sharing of knowledge by local Indigenous leaders.
