Information for Support Positions

The Brandon School Division recruits support staff for a variety of jobs and positions.

  • Custodial and Maintenance
  • Educational Assistant and Lunchroom Assistant
  • Secretarial/Clerical and Library Technician
  • Transportation
  • Casual/Relief Employment

Support staff employees are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees. (Click here to view the Collective Agreement.)

Recruitment

In accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement, when the Division has a new or vacant position an "internal" posting is provided for the benefit of staff currently employed in permanent positions who may wish to transfer. The Division considers internal permanent staff for these jobs, based on qualifications and seniority, before it recruits or considers external applicants.

In the event that there are no suitable internal candidates, the position will be posted on our website at Employment Opportunities and in the Brandon Sun.

Applications

Applications to open postings may be received online. To apply, click the Apply link and follow the instructions provided under the Instructions tab. The online application process will require the attachment of a cover letter, a comprehensive resume, and relevant transcripts and/or certificates. It will also require the completion of information regarding education, experience, and contact information for three work-related references.

If you are unable to apply online, you will be required to complete a Brandon School Division Support Staff Application Form (available from the Administration Office located at 1031 6th Street in Brandon). You will need to attach a cover letter, comprehensive resume, and relevant transcripts and/or certificates to the completed application form and submit these documents prior to the posted deadline date for applications.

Selection

Applications are reviewed by the Director of Human Resources and forwarded to the appropriate supervisory staff for final short listing and interview. Note that only those candidates selected for an interview are contacted. Following interview, the supervisor submits his/her recommendation for employment to the Director of Human Resources for approval by the Secretary-Treasurer. An offer of employment is made to the successful candidate by the Director of Human Resources as soon as possible. Once an offer of employment is accepted, all other candidates who were selected for interview are notified.

Educational and Lunchroom Assistants

The Brandon School Division uses a different format for the recruitment of Educational and Lunchroom Assistants than it does for other support staff positions due to the potential for disruption in the classroom during the course of the school year. This is in accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement.

Recruitment

Permanent vacancies are posted in June with employment to commence in September. This posting process follows the internal/external posting schedule as outlined above for in-scope support staff positions.

Vacancies occurring during the course of the school year are filled on a term basis until the end of the school year (or for the required duration of the term) with consideration given to candidates in the following order: former term employees, active casual employees, new candidates with applications on file.

During the course of the school year Educational Assistant positions will be posted only if specific skills (e.g., Braille) are required for the assignment and there are no suitable internal candidates. Such positions are posted on our website at Employment Opportunities and in the Brandon Sun. Interested candidates must apply specifically to these postings even if they currently have an application on file.

Applications

The application process for posted positions is similar to that outlined above for in-scope support staff positions, and applications are received online.

Additionally, general applications for potential positions that may arise are received from July to April of each school year. This process is also similar to that outlined above for in-scope support staff, with applications being received online.

Applicants will be required to provide three written work-related references on the forms provided (download the form by clicking the Request for Confidential Reference Form link provided in the job posting).

If you are unable to apply online, you will be required to complete a Brandon School Division Educational Assistant Application Package (available from the Administration Office located at 1031 6th Street in Brandon). You will need to attach a cover letter, comprehensive resume, and relevant transcripts and/or certificates to the completed application form and submit these documents to the Human Resources Department. You will also need to have three work-related references complete the Request for Confidential Reference Forms and submit their forms directly to the Human Resources Department.

Selection

Selection for permanent positions that have been posted will follow the process outlined above for in-scope support staff positions.

In selecting candidates for term positions during the course of the school year, the appropriate Principal/Supervisor will review candidates for suitable qualifications. Depending on the assignment and the availability of suitable candidates an interview may or may not take place. Once the Principal/Supervisor has made his/her decision a recommendation for employment will follow the process outlined above for in-scope support staff positions.
