Betty Gibson School Presents: “Celebration of Indigenous Art History”

Betty Gibson’s students studied the Woodland art movement by Norval Morrisseau, an Indigenous artist from the Bingwe Neyaashi Anishinaabek First Nation. Norval Morrisseau became known as the Picasso of the North and the Grandfather of the Woodland style.  He taught the world about the traditional beliefs and wisdom of the Ojibway people. Our learning was translated into our own Woodland style paintings to honor and respect the Indigenous artists that teach and inspire us. 

Our Grade 7/8 students created a progressive art piece depicting The Seven Sacred Teachings, the 7 grandfathers, and the animals that represent each value. Every Betty Gibson student from K-8 had ‘Hands on Print’. Our shared art experience helped us connect to each other and express to one another, that every child matters! 

On Monday, June 27^th, students and staff from Betty Gibson School presented to our Board of Trustees, sharing their experiences and masterpieces inspired by their learning.
