Diversity and Inclusion in Education

header

The Board of Trustees and Senior Administration want to affirm that Brandon School Division is committed to ensuring a learning environment that is free from discriminatory practices based on any individual’s sexuality, gender identity or gender expression. We support learning environments that respect and embrace diversity. We strive to create welcoming and safe spaces, to raise awareness and offer learning opportunities, and to support and protect students and staff. Respect and safety are for everyone, in every school; however, 2STLGBQ+ people typically experience higher rates of harassment, discrimination, suicide, as well as poor mental and physical health outcomes. Creating school environments that respect and affirm diversity will empower all students and employees. Gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation are protected rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Manitoba Human Rights Code. The Division recognizes the importance that inclusive educational environments can play in building the personal resilience of 2STLGBQ+ students, staff and their families.

We understand and recognize the concerns raised regarding inconsistency in the communication around recent activities at Maryland Park School; we will learn from this experience.

There is important work and supportive, inclusive practices going on in every school in our Division. We have come a long way in supporting and celebrating the rich diversity of our school communities. We recognize that this work must continue and we commit to doing so, to build a safe, respectful environment and a successful future for all of our students and staff.
