Brandon High School Coding Competition

Brandon University recently hosted the Brandon High School Coding Competition on May 24, 2022. Vincent Massey Teacher Eleni Tellidis, Neelin teacher Diane Fontaine and Crocus Plains teacher Cheryl Klimack worked with BU’s Dr. Ashraf Abdelbar to organize a day for the three BSD high schools to send 28 computer science student participants for a day of collaboration and competition.
The day began with Dr. Gwynfor Richards sharing some of his university life experiences with the group. The competition involved having students from the schools collaborating in teams of four to solve the greatest number of coding problems in two hours.
The winning team consisted of Crocus Plains members Maya and Ruben Janse van Rensburg and Neelin members Alec Gibson and Jeremy Slomiany. Second place team members were Matthew Fugleberg and Jia Yan Li of Vincent Massey and Jay Patel and Kent MacDearmid of Crocus Plains. Third place went to Lily Jiang and David Paddock of Vincent Massey and Micah Roberts and Long Hui Zhang of Crocus Plains.
Participants each received gift packages courtesy of 4R Agronomy and the Crocus Plains Graphic Design Studio. Winning swag was also generously provided by the Dean of Science, Dr. Bernadette Ardelli. Lunch was organized by Dr. Abdelbar and Dr. Richards.
Current and former BU students also provided stimulating conversation of interest to the high school students. The day concluded with a tour of the University provided by Brandon University Student Services.
