June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions, and experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. It's a time to honour the stories, achievements, and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to impact the evolving Canada.

How to Get Involved:

  • Discover Indigenous Voices: Read books, watch films, attend performances, or listen to music by Indigenous artists to learn about their stories and cultures firsthand.
  • Explore History and Truth: Use educational resources and apps like Reconciliation: A Starting Point to understand key historical events and reconciliation efforts.
  • Learn About Residential Schools: Visit the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation to learn about the legacy of residential schools, survivors’ experiences, and the 94 Calls to Action.
  • Understand Ongoing Issues: Read reports from the National Inquiry on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls to grasp the impacts of colonialism and racism today.
  • Connect with Communities: Explore maps of Indigenous Peoples and lands to recognize the communities around you and learn about land acknowledgments.
  • Explore Data: Check out Statistics Canada’s resources for up-to-date demographic and social statistics on Indigenous peoples.
