National Indigenous Veterans Day (November 8, 2023)
National Indigenous Veterans Day is a Canadian memorial day observed on November 8th every year. It is dedicated to the contributions of Indigenous Canadians to military service. National Indigenous Veterans Day was inaugurated in Winnipeg in 1994 and has since become a nationwide observance.
The First Nations, Métis and Inuit people of Canada have a long and proud tradition of military service to our country.
All BSD Schools and Facilities will lower their flags to half-mast from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, in honour of Indigenous Veterans Day.
On this day, we honour the First Nations, Inuit and Métis men and women who serve and have served with distinction in the Canadian military for more than a century. Their contributions, both on the frontlines and at home, cannot be overstated, and Canada owes them a debt of gratitude. Their sacrifice is made all the more poignant by the discrimination many of these veterans experienced — and still experience — from Canadian society at large. As we continue to grow as a country, recognizing the contribution of Indigenous veterans and their role in our shared history is more important than ever.
