Martin Riquelme - Provincial Chess Champion

Chess 2024

Grade 11 Vincent Massey student Martin Riquelme was victorious this past weekend in Winnipeg at the Manitoba Provincial Chess Champions.  Martin first started playing chess when he lived in Chile. He was 5 years old when he was introduced to chess by his brother who played in the chess club at school.  He's been a member of the Brandon Chess Club since it was founded in November of 2017 by his father.

Martin's current FIDE rating is 1857 and after his success at the provincial level, Martin will now represent grade 11 at the Canadian Chess Challenge in Moncton, N.B. in May. Martin won nationals last year and is returning to defend his title. He's looking forward to traveling to New Brunswick and playing against opponents from other provinces.

Good luck at Nationals!
