Diversify Your Classroom Library Program at Waverly Park School

library

Through a partnership with The Critical Thinking ConsortiumIndigo Love of Reading (ILOR) and Facing History & Ourselves organizations, the Grade 7 Murray Class at Waverly Park School was selected as a recipient of $2500 to purchase books for their classroom library to help create more inclusive classroom resource collections that are reflective of the diverse identities, stories, and voices within our school and surrounding community.

Our Grade 7 classroom, one area that we have focused spending the grant funds was on new sets of novels for book clubs. The grant funds allowed us to purchase more diverse novel choices and multiple copies of each novel. This has given our Grade 7 students more choice in what they are reading.

The students have been so excited to have new novels added to our classroom library and have been a great help in recommending novels that they would like to see added to our classroom library as well. The books that have been purchased through the grant have made a very positive impact and have led us to having important conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
