Diversify Your Classroom Library Program at George Fitton School

library

Through a partnership with The Critical Thinking ConsortiumIndigo Love of Reading (ILOR) and Facing History & Ourselves organizations, the Grade 5/6 Greig Class at George Fitton School was selected as a recipient of $2500 to purchase books for their classroom library to help create more inclusive classroom resource collections that are reflective of the diverse identities, stories, and voices within our school and surrounding community.

Through the Diversify Your Classroom Library Grant, our class has engaged in understanding the importance of where stories come from and whose voices we need to hear. Through discussion and exploration of stories from picture books to novels to graphic novels, we have found stories that are windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors.

Through conversations about identity, diversity, and understanding, we are discovering the importance of hearing and reading stories that help us understand ourselves, each other, and the world around us. Each student has a few new favourite books, and we are excitedly awaiting our last shipment of books! A huge thank you to Facing History, Indigo Love of Reading, and The Critical Thinking Consortium for making this experience possible!
