Brandon School Division Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Dr. Marc Casavant has been appointed as the Superintendent of Schools and Chief Executive Officer.
Dr. Marc Casavant brings considerable experience in education having over ten (10) years in senior leadership roles. His career in education began in Saskatchewan in 1995 where he taught grades 9 through 12 before becoming Principal of Stobart Elementary Community School in Duck Lake, Saskatchewan. It was here that he initiated and developed an Elder program through building relationships with First Nations Partners. During this time, he also implemented a Pre-K program in the school and developed and implemented After School Programs for the community.
In 2002, Dr. Casavant accepted the role of Principal at Big River Community High School in Big River, Saskatchewan where he established Professional Learning Communities, promoted and implemented a restructured school day and developed a partnership with the RCMP to initiate a Liaison Officer in the school.
Earlier in 2001, Dr. Casavant obtained his Ph.D in Educational Administration from the University of Saskatchewan and not long after in 2004, became the Director of Education for the Eastend School Division in Saskatchewan. In 2006, he prepared the school division for the amalgamation and transition into the Chinook School Division where he then took on the role of Superintendent of Assessment and Research, reporting indirectly to the Deputy Director of Education.
In 2009, Dr. Casavant moved to Weyburn, Saskatchewan to become the Director of Education and Chief Executive Officer for the South East Cornerstone Public School Division. In this leadership role, Dr. Casavant was accountable for a division with a student enrollment of 8300, an operational budget of $100 million in addition to a capital budget of $30 million.
Through these experiences, he has effectively advanced system priorities in areas such as assessment, curriculum implementation, early learning, First Nations and Metis Education and graduation rates.
His experience also includes throughout the years, serving as a Session Lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina. During his career thus far, Dr. Casavant has served on numerous committees which include LEADS Educational Leadership Committee, LEADS Saskatchewan Educational Leadership Unit and LEADS Assessment and Evaluation Policy Committee. He also has several publications, including Effective Leadership – Bringing mentoring and creativity to the Principalship (NASSP Bulletin 85 (624), 71-81) and school effectiveness reviews for SELU.
In 2012, he played an integral role in the school division receiving the 2012 Premier's Award in Saskatchewan for Innovation and Excellence for the Response to Intervention Model that was implemented under his leadership. His development of strategic plans has been through utilizing a Continuous Improvement Framework supported by LEAN and Hoshin Kanri methodologies and his foundation to lead others in this work has been through Stephen Covey's "Great Leaders, Great Teams, Great Results".
Dr. Marc Casavant is thrilled and looking forward to relocating to Brandon, Manitoba with his wife and three (3) children. He states "The Brandon School Division is a recognized leader for education in the province of Manitoba. I feel fortunate coming to a school division with such a strong reputation and am looking forward to serving the students, staff, parents, community, and the Board of Trustees as we work collaboratively in achieving the vision, mission, values and strategic priorities of the Brandon School Division."
Trustee Chair Mr. Mark Sefton stated "The Board of Trustees is very happy to have Marc joining the Brandon School Division. Marc's education, experience and leadership will be a great addition to the superb Senior Administrative team already assembled. We look forward to working with him starting in July."
Dr. Marc Casavant will take over as Superintendent of Schools for the Brandon School Division, from Superintendent Dr. Donna Michaels who retires after 15 years with the Brandon School Division and 50 years as a public educator in Canada. Dr. Marc Casavant will commence his duties on July 1, 2016.
