High School Featured Athlete - October 2018

Brandon School Division recognizes student‐athletes from each our three high schools for demonstrating outstanding character and leadership in athletics and community involvement.  Each month, one student from each of our high schools is selected as a Featured Brandon School Division Athlete.  

Please join us in recognizing the following students:

Ryden Hargreaves
Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School 

Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School is pleased to name Grade 11 student, Ryden Hargreaves, as their High School Featured Athlete. 

Ryden was the boy's medalist at the Golf Zone Championship; he shot a round of 75, and ventured off to compete in the High School Golf Provincials at Hecla Island on September 28th.  

Ryden also contributed to the early success of the Plainsmen Volleyball Team by accumulating 20 kills, 15 aces and 10 blocks in the first couple weeks of September.

Ryden participated in the Maple Leaf Junior Tour events to compete with other competitive golfers as well as played club volleyball with the 16U Cats Gold team. 

Coach's Quote:  "Ryden is a talented multi-sport athlete. He is hard working and very coachable. His success are accomplished through his drive to get better at each sport he participates in, and I am very excited to continue working with Ryden through-out this season."

École secondaire Neelin High School

École secondaire Neelin High School is pleased to name Grade 12 student, Hillary Derewianchuk, as their High School Featured Athlete.

Hillary is a compassionate, positive and highly dedicated athlete. This year Hillary has showed a level of commitment and drive, which has made her a huge role model to the younger athletes on the cross-country running team. 

In competition, Hillary consistently pushes herself to reach new personal bests, many times requesting and completing extra workouts. Hillary will undoubtedly find great success as she competes in at the Provincial Cross Country Championships on October 17th.  

Hillary works tirelessly in her community and school. She is heavily involves in Ukrainian dance in Brandon, while also being a very important part of Neelin's Student Representative Council. Hillary brings a level of empathy, eagerness and devotion to Neelin's school community, making her an excellent role model to other students.

oach's Quote:  "Hillary has been a pleasure to coach. She continuously works to improve her performance, both as an athlete and person.  She is highly reflective and has earned her successes, and I look forward to seeing her impact the world in the ways I know she is capable of."

Hayley Shanks

Vincent Massey High School 

Vincent Massey High School is pleased to name Grade 12 student, Hayley Shanks, as their High School Featured Athlete. 

During this year's golf season, Hayley has held the individual low score of 77 during the zone qualifying round.  She was an important member of the 2017 Provincial Championship and will be heavily relied upon again during the 2018 Golf Provincial Championship.  Hayley has also achieved success as a two-time winner competing in the Junior Girls Tamarack and finished 5th at the Manitoba Junior Golf Championships this past summer.

Hayley has become instrumental in helping with the program "SwimAbility Manitoba" which is a program designed to provide accessible one-on-one swimming instruction to children with special needs. 

Hayley is a two time Provincial Champion, looking to win for a third time, and has spent countless hours improving her skills. 

Congratulations to Ryden, Hillary & Hayley as this month's High School Featured Athlete.  We look forward to highlighting more students here in the 2018-2019 school year.
