High School Featured Athlete - January 2017

January 6, 2017

Brandon School Division would like to recognize student‐athletes from our three high Schools for demonstrating outstanding character and leadership in athletics and community involvement.  Each month, one student from each of our three high schools will be selected as a Featured Brandon School Division Athlete.  Please join us in recognizing the following students:

John Saville
École secondaire Neelin High School

École secondaire Neelin High School is pleased to name Grade 11 student, John Saville, as their Featured High School Athlete.

John is a dedicated member of Neelin's basketball team.  His attitude and effort in practice has allowed him to develop strong skills over the last two years.  John's strength on the court comes from his quickness on defense. John is a team player who is always trying to help his teammates improve.

While maintaining an 88% academic average, John was also on the academic honor roll for his first two years of high school, and is on pace to be on the honor roll again for Grade 11.

John is a passionate soccer player and gives back to the sport by conducting player development camps for the younger soccer players of BYSA. John also helps with Mini Spartans as a coach.

Paige Donald
Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School

Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School is pleased to name Grade 12 student, Paige Donald, as their Featured High School Athlete.

Paige brings valuable experience to the varsity girls basketball team as she is returning for her third year on the team and the second year as a team captain. She is an incredible leader as she has a strong understanding of the team's philosophies and is always supportive to her teammates both on and off the floor.

While maintaining a 95% academic average, Paige helped lead the team to a 6 and 2 record as the Plainsmen won their home tournament before going 2 – 2 at the Pembina Trails Classic in Winnipeg.

Paige keeps herself incredibly busy by playing basketball, volleyball and fastball at Crocus Plains as well as club volleyball, CP Pride Club Basketball and is also a member of the Westman team for the Manitoba Summer Games. Aside from being an instrumental player for all of the teams she is also always one of the first people to step up to help with a number of fundraisers or volunteer opportunities that we take part in.

Jackson Stephens
Vincent Massey High School

Vincent Massey High School is pleased to name Grade 12 student, Jackson Stephens, as their High School Featured Athlete.

Jackson is a special hockey player and an even greater teammate.  As an alternate captain he patrols our blue line and leads by example. Soft spoken but extremely respected by his peers, Jackson is arguably the top defencemen in our league.  When you can combine size, strength and skating, top it off with the ability to jump in the play and contribute offensively but also be a beast at shutting down opponent's top players you know your talking about a rare & elite high school player.

While completing Advanced Placement Psychology courses, Jackson has assisted the Vincent Massey High School hockey team in winning the WHSHL League the last two seasons.  Jackson also was an important member of the varsity volleyball team that made it to the final four in AAAA provincials.  Jackson was named the MVP of our high school baseball team last season.

Jackson is an all-around athlete and leader.  Jackson has competed on the Varsity volleyball team, the Varsity Hockey team, and the Varsity Baseball team, and volunteers his time at Simplot Park, helping groom diamonds, running the canteen and mowing grass.

Congratulations to John, Paige & Jackson on being selected as a Brandon School Division High School Featured Athlete.  We look forward to showcasing more students here during the 2016-2017 school year.
